An exhaustive collection of the works, lectures, posthumous works, and correspondence of Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand Solger, drawn from the19th and 20th century.

This edition of the works and writings of Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand Solger (born November 28, 1780, in Schwedt an der Oder in the Uckermark region; died October 25, 1819, in Berlin) follows the text and arrangement of the first editions of both the works published independently during his lifetime and the posthumous editions. Before Solger, a trained lawyer, devoted himself exclusively to philosophy, he received his doctorate in Jena in 1808 with a two-volume annotated translation of Sophoclean's tragedies, published simultaneously. In the summer of that same year, he met the poet Ludwig Tieck, and from 1810 onward, after taking up a professorship in Frankfurt an der Oder, they engaged in an increasingly close personal and epistolary exchange. This was first partially documented in the two-volume posthumous writings and correspondence published in 1827 by his friends Johann Ludwig Tieck (1773–1853) and the historian Friedrich von Raumer (1781–1873). The first volume, entitled "Correspondence and Short Essays," contains both theoretical and private correspondence, supplemented by biographical diary and travelogue entries, as well as independent notes on Goethe's *Elective Affinities*. Only the second volume offers—with the exception of the so-called "Schlegel Review," which was published in advance in *Yearbook of Literature*, Vol. 7 (Vienna 1819, pp. 80–155)—Solger's actual, mostly unfinished, posthumous texts.

While Solger's translations have been repeatedly reprinted up to the present day, his major work, Erwin (1815), which was difficult for his contemporaries to access due to its literary form as a dialogue, as well as the Philosophical Dialogues completed shortly before his early death and the posthumous edition prepared by Raumer and Tieck, found only episodic resonance. As a result, the more popular presentation of the Lectures on Aesthetics (Berlin 1829), edited by Solger's former student, the philologist Karl Wilhelm Ludwig Heyse (1797-1855), led to his philosophy being viewed for a long time primarily as an aesthetic theory emphasizing the aspects of symbol and irony, thus relegating Solger's other central metaphysical interests—from a theory of dialogical hermeneutics to a theory of mythology and the philosophy of religion—to the background.

Thus, we hope that by presenting, for the first time in a single edition, all of Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand Solger's own writings published posthumously, along with his scattered correspondence, we can close a hitherto unfilled editorial gap—subject to the likely future of a historical-critical edition—and thus make it possible to illuminate Solger's position within his entire milieu, which was shaped by both national patriotism and Goetheanism, as well as by the philosophers of German Idealism, especially Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel, and by the Romantics Tieck, Schleiermacher, and Schlegel.

This edition unites in a single collected works edition all of Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand Solger's own writings published posthumously, along with his scattered correspondence. Its arrangement includes the following sections:
